"By this, all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." - John 13:35
The Church of Christ began meeting in Mexia in 1901 due to the efforts of J.W.
Clark. Shortly after its beginning, the meeting place burned and the members
scattered to smaller area congregations.
In 1924, a group of members began meeting in a school building on South
McKinney Street. In the following years, the church grew and met at several
locations including a lodge hall over the Riddle Furniture Company, a new
building on South McKinney and a Presbyterian building on Milam Street.
By the 1950's, the church had grown to the point that a new facility was needed.
In January of 1958, the congregation moved into a new building at 602 N. Ross
avenue. Several additions were made to the Ross Avenue building including
additional classrooms and a fellowship hall. The church membership continued to
grow still more during these years, reaching over 300 in average Sunday
attendance. Because of the lack of adequate space, the church finally decided
to build a new building that would accomodate the needs of the congregation, as
well as allowing for future growth.
In October of 1984, the congregation moved into its current location at 918
Tehuacana Rd (Highway 171). We have been worshipping together here at the
same location since, and look forward to many more years of growth together in
God's Kingdom.
